Volunteers from the North Devon Volunteering Development Agency travelled to County Hall in Exeter last week to receive medals for from HM Lord-Lieutenant of Devon in a ceremony organised by the Community Service Volunteers organisation for the Year of the Volunteer 2005. Awards were given for commitment and inspiration to a total of 35 regional winners including five from Ilfracombe. Award winners Tim Cox, Erica Castle, Arlene Rawlings and Yvonne Davey. Award winner Jane Cracknell was unable to attend. |

Each winner had a citation read out by the clerk to the Lieutenancy in the presence of civic dignitaries including the Mayor and Mayoress of Torbay, Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, the Chairman of Devon County Council and the High Sheriff of Devon and Lady Cave. Members of the Ilfracombe group were nominated for outstanding volunteering activities over many years helping the community, showing dedication in activities such as environmental work, community transport, befriending and more. Two of the winners, Jane Cracknell and Erica Castle have also been invited to a further round of the Awards, the national Year of the Volunteer 2005 Celebration event at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London in January 2006. The event is a showcase and celebration of volunteering, at which the Nationwide England Category Champions will be announced and attended by celebrities and VIPS. Erica Castle said: ‘The Lord-Lieutenant asked me where I found the time to do so much. I replied that I’ve plenty of time now my children have left home but getting involved with the community has always been in my nature and the happiness I have in my life is all thanks to volunteering.’ |
