The Moon Hotel (see 28 High Street), stood on the site till 1876 when it was sold for £765 and demolished to make way for the present building. It shows how the Victorian’s adapted the Georgian tradition to suit changing taste, keeping the flat façade with the parapet hiding the roof but emphasising the cornice and parapet and introducing paired, round-headed windows in the style of a Florentine Renaissance palace. It is an excellent example of how simple materials (in this case Maryland brick) can be used decoratively and tastefully.
