Turtons & the Victoria Hotel
Drawing and text by kind permission of Jim Bates.

One photograph of these buildings dates them to 1834. There are distinct similarities indicating that the same person built them. The most obvious similarity being the strong cornice running along both eaves.

The carved woodwork on Turton’s with delicate ‘barwork’ is especially fine and the curved heads to the upper window of the Hotel have been well preserved.

Both buildings fit well into the street and deserve careful attention.
