The Lantern began life in 1728 as the chapel of the Independents, later
called The Congregationalists. Rebuilt in 1819 it was set back from the
road with a graveyard in front. When further burials were forbidden in1834
the church was extended over the graveyard and records show that there are
68 people buried under the building.
Built in a Venetian Gothic style not often found in this country, the
church is now Ilfracombe's Community Centre.
