The Lantern
Drawing and text by kind permission of Jim Bates.

The Lantern began life in 1728 as the chapel of the Independents, later called The Congregationalists. Rebuilt in 1819 it was set back from the road with a graveyard in front. When further burials were forbidden in1834 the church was extended over the graveyard and records show that there are 68 people buried under the building.

Built in a Venetian Gothic style not often found in this country, the church is now Ilfracombe's Community Centre.
