This group started in October, 1998 for the purpose of visiting Devon towns and little known villages to find the Alphabet Plaques put up in 1994 to commemorate the centenaries of Parish Councils.

Group members organised the visits between themselves, arranging for coffee on arrival, pub lunches, visits to churches and persuading local people to act as guides. In this way a good deal of local history was acquired.

Passport books were used with spaces for stamps indicating when a visit had been made. Two members successfully completed all twenty -six plaques including visits to Chumleigh, Cheldon, Yarnscombe, Atherington, West and East Putford, Frithelstock, Great Torrington, Shebbear, Sheepwash and Fremington.

A publication including photographs of the plaques as well as information about the villages is being prepared.
