The Geology Group makes short expeditions within the area of North Devon for the purpose of realising the varied geology, with its mixture of sandstones, slates and sand dunes, that contributes to the formation of the landscape. Striking differences are to be seen between coasts that face westwards towards the Atlantic and those that face northwards to the Bristol Channel.
At Hartland Quay in North Devon, as seen in the photograph below, striking cliff formations reveal the strata of rocks folded whilst still in their molten state.
