Ilfracombe May Day

The May Day celebrations started at the Youth Hostel at 11am. The Town Crier lead the procession of local children, Mayor and band Humdrumconundrum along the High Street to the seafront via Northfield Road. There was children’s Maypole dancing and Country dancing from 12noon plus dancing by Morris and Folk teams from across Devon. At 2pm the procession moved off to the Pier for more music and dancing where the Spirit of Summer was released at 3.30pm by stripping the leaves from Jack O the Green.  This is an old Ilfracombe tradition from the 1850’s.
