The Waverley
Home

An estimated six million trippers came to Ilfracombe on the Campbell's steamers between 1896 and 1959 and today the Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, still runs excursions from the pier during the summer months.

In 1825 the steamer, the Duke of Lancaster, first started making calls to Ilfracombe. The journey was much quicker than that of any stage coach and encouraged the expansion of the tourist industry to Ilfracombe. By 1852 powerful steamers such as the Phoenix and the Star were also able to carry horses and light carriages so that passengers would have their own transport when they reached Ilfracombe. By the 1890's is was not unusual to see five steamers moored side by side in the outer harbour.
