Ilfracombe Holy Trinity Church |

In 1321 Bishop Stapledon ordered that the Norman Church be enlarged. Only the font is a visible reminder of this period and it was recut in 1861. The octagonal pillars in the Nave are 14th century and the Chantry Chapels date from 15th century. The original dormer windows in the roof were intended to throw light on to the Cross above the Rood Screen, probably removed during the Commonwealth. The painted bosses of grotesque faces, eagles and fish are a delight, as are the corbels of mythical beasts surmounted by angels. The Altar is formed from a Jacobean chest, and the pulpit is of the same period. The windows are a joy; excellent examples of Victorian stained glass, with two by Kempe. |
