Ilfracombe War Memorial
Home

Ilfracombe set up a War Memorial, a granite column surmounted by a bronze winged figure of Victory which was unveiled by Lord Fortescue on Armistice Day 1924.

Bronze panels bearing the names of the 157 men from Ilfracombe Parish who had died on active service during the war were affixed later. A Garden of Rememberance was laid out around it. After the Second World War, it was necessary to add 3 small panels to the base of the plinth supporting the granite column. They bore the names of 59 men and 1 woman - a member of the ATS - who died in active service between 1939 and 1945.
